Episode 11 — A Study of Titus
Remember What You Were
Titus 3:3
Before Paul gives one of the most concentrated gospel summaries
in the entire New Testament, he stops and makes Titus — and us —
look at the before picture. Not "you were," but "we were." In
this episode we trace six precise words for life apart from
grace, and ask what it costs — and what it gives back — to
remember honestly where we came from.

From the Study Notes
|
“For at one time we too were foolish, disobedient,
misled, and enslaved to all sorts of desires and
pleasures—living in malice and envy, being hated and
hating one another.”
— Titus 3:3, BSB

The Autobiographical We. Paul doesn't say
"you were." He says we — putting the man who wrote a
third of the New Testament right in the before picture with
everyone else. Foolish, disobedient, misled, enslaved, malicious,
envious. Not a description of the worst people in the world —
a description of all of us, before grace. Honest memory of that
is the ground of Christian humility.
Who in your life still needs to see that you remember where
you came from?
